RIDGEWAY — Later this month, five property owners in the village of Ridgeway will have their numbers pulled out in a lottery. But the prize is not something any of them will be happy to receive.

McGUFFEY — A veteran school administrator will be the elementary principal at Upper Scioto Valley. Christine Jeffers was approved by the USV Board of Education at its meeting on Monday evening. Her two-year contract will pay her $53,900 for the remainder of the first year (175 days) and $63,200 for 200 days in the second year.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Students were evacuated and sent home after smoke from a small grease fire left the hallways of Riverdale School too smoky for students to return to classes Monday. Superintendent Jeff Young said the fire alarm was pulled at approximately 10:50 a.m. and the fire was quickly extinguished in the home economics and Spanish room.

McGUFFEY — Village officials in McGuffey were told Monday the town will receive a $750,000 grant for 2020. The grant comes from the Community Development Block Grant Neighborhood Revitalization Program.

Normally a department’s request for a $70,000 increase in its budget would be frowned upon by members of Kenton City Council’s Finance Committee. But Fire Chief Tim Clark reported his department has the anticipated revenue to more than cover the increase during Monday’s committee meeting. It preceded council’s first meeting of the month.

Five record prices were set along with a big increase in premiums paid to the young sellers at Saturday's Hardin County Junior Fair Livestock Sale. New sales records were set for the purchase of the champion gilt, champion and reserve champion dairy steer and champion and reserve champion beef feeder, according to information compiled by livestock sale chairman Don Spar, who will be retiring after 30 years on the fair board.

ADA — Remodeling of Ada's Municipal Building should have been approaching completion this month. But a delay in getting the elevator installed likely has pushed the finishing date back to mid-November, Village Administrator Jamie Hall reported to village council members on Tuesday night.

Hardin County Suicide Prevention/Mental Health Awareness Month is being observed during September. As part of the observance, friends or families who have lost a loved one to suicide in the county have placed signs of remembrance in the southeast corner of the lawn of the courthouse.

The crowning of the Junior Fair King and Queen highlights tonight’s activities during opening day of the Hardin County Fair. Naming of the king and queen will begin at 7 p.m. in the grandstand.
