ALGER — The USV Ambulance District is growing and the result is an expansion of services and facilities. Doug LaRue, chief of the Alger Squad of the USV district, has announced that starting next month, there will be two full-time EMTs working days out of the Alger station and later this spring, ground will be broken to construct a sub-station in Roundhead.

A crew of village workers in Forest put the finishing touches on repairs to a broken water main on Blaine Street on Friday. Village Administrator Wes Davis said the town was lucky.

VAN WERT — Led by the duo of Nate Place and Lawson Blackmore, Van Wert asserted its will on Kenton at both ends of the floor from the opening tip in rolling to a 56-34 Western Buckeye League boys basketball victory over the visiting Wildcats on Friday night.

Dr. John Lomax, retired professor of history at Ohio Northern University spoke at the Ada Kiwanis Club meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 22 about the Martin Luther King Jr. statue at ONU. He noted that it was Jan. 11, 1968 when the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at ONU during a weekly chapel program.

As their Social Security funds dwindle toward the end of the month, many area senior citizens and those on financial assistance find themselves searching for a meal. Helping Hands Outreach of Kenton is hoping to bridge that gap. Volunteers will prepare homemade meals to be served at its facility on Cleveland Avenue on the last Saturday of each month.

After struggling on the offensive end of the floor against Van Wert for the first three quarters, the Kenton girls basketball team found its game in the fourth quarter on Thursday night. Unfortunately for the Lady Wildcats it was too little, too late as the Cougars held off the late Kenton rally for a 56-46 victory in Western Buckeye League play.

DOLA — Hardin Northern’s 2-3 zone kept Perry from finding any consistent offense during Thursday night’s girls basketball game, allowing the Lady Polar Bear offense to get some separation and take the 56-35 win. The Northwest Central Conference victory improves the Polar Bears’ record to 5-12 overall, 2-4 in the conference. Perry falls to 2-13, 1-4.
