Mental health first aid class being offered

PVFF, supported by the Mental Health and Recovery Services of Allen, Auglaize and Hardin Counties, has met a major milestone in certifying area Mental Health First Aiders.

There have been 503 persons completing the Mental Health First Aid coursework since the program was first offered 18 months ago.

Adults participating in both the Adult and Youth Mental Health First Aid classes have reported gaining knowledge and skills in understanding mental illnesses, how to approach a person who may be developing a mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis and now know of local resources to help.

PVFF will next be offering the Youth Mental Health First Aid Course to any community member that is engaged with youth as a parents, family member, school staff, faith leaders, or sports coaches.

Several course opportunities have been scheduled throughout the summer months to be accessible for school staff.

Similar to ‘First Aid’ and CPR, ‘Mental Health First Aid’, an 8-hour course, is for adults to help any young person experiencing mental health challenges or crises. The National Council for Behavioral Health certified the Partnership for Violence Free Families to provide Mental Health First Aid courses to prepare the Allen, Auglaize and Hardin County area with the knowledge and skills to help teens, ages 13 – 18.

Participants completing the sessions will be accredited as Mental Health First Aiders. The registration fee is $20 to be brought to class. Register at www.mhfa.care.
