Kentonite commits suicide outside burning mobile home

A Kenton man took his own life with a firearm while a fire swept through a mobile home on Tuesday morning.
The victim has been identified as Gary Lee Waite, 13026 Ohio 31, Kenton.
The incident took place at No. 50 Rush Mobile Home Park off West Lima Street on the city’s west side.
Kenton Police Chief John Vermillion said when two Kenton police officers arrived at the fire scene at approximately 8:55 a.m., the mobile home was fully engulfed in flames. They were advised that someone was potentially armed.
As they approached the mobile home, Vermillion said the officers witnessed the man commit suicide with a firearm.
Vermillion said there were rumors that the officers shot the man, but neither officers’ weapons were discharged. The Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation was called to investigate and verified no police weapons were fired, he said.
The Kenton Fire Department responded to extinguish the fire. The State Fire Marshal was assisting at the scene.
Vermillion said the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office patrolled the city while his department was tied up at the scene.
