Barrett

Athens
Services for Donald L. Barrett will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Athens by the Rev. Thomas Hanover. Burial will be in West Union Street Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard; K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion, VFW Post 3477 and VFW Post 9893 Honor Guards at the cemetery.
Friends may call 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens.
He died Friday, April 4, 2008, at the Willow Brook Christian Home in Columbus.
He was born July 1, 1918, in Kenton to Emerson and Laura Laubis Barrett.
Surviving are a daughter, Beth Ann (Charles) Barrett-Wallace of Orlando, Fla.; two sons, Donald (Laura) Barrett of Westerville and Douglas (Lynn) Barrett of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Charity (John) Seymour of Uniontown, Christy (Capt. Kevin Wenger, USAF) Wenger of Okinawa, Japan and Donald Alexander Barrett of Westerville; two step-grandchildren, Jonathan Wallace of Columbus and Amy (Eric) Wiswell of Houston, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Katie, Nathan, Kiley and Drake; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Marjorie Klaas Barrett, who died May 15, 2006, and three sisters, Dorothy Whipps, Ruth Cook and Virginia Gerlach.
A 1936 graduate of Kenton High School and a 1940 graduate of Heidelberg College, he also completed graduate work at the University of Nebraska and Ohio University. He was a Colonel (retired) in the U.S. Air Force with 28 years of service. He was a master navigator/ bombardier with the 8th Air Force in the European Theatre during World War II. He came to Athens in 1965 as a professor of Aerospace Studies with the Air Force ROTC Program. He served as mayor of Athens from 1972-1984.
He served as a member of several area boards including trustee of O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Area Agency on Aging, United Seniors of Athens County, Salvation Army and the Appalachian Community Visiting Nurses Association. He has also served on the state level of the following: Past President Ohio Municipal League, Past President Buckeye Hills Hocking Valley Regional Development, Past Director State Fire Commission, Past President Ohio Advisory Commission for the Aged.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Athens, Past President and member of the Rotary Club of Athens, Air Force Association, Life Member VFW Post 3477, K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion and 40 et 8 Voiture 775 and volunteered for many other civic organizations.
He was elected into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame and recently elected into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame, both for his service to the Athens community.

Combs
Stanley, 67
Alger
Services for Stanley Combs will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hanson-Neely Funeral Home in Alger by the Rev. James Holbrook. Burial will be in Preston Cemetery, Alger.
Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and until time of services Thursday.
He died at 6:37 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2008, at the Triumph Hospital in Lima.
He was born June 12, 1940, in Magoffin County, Ky., to Eligha and Gertrude (Rowe) Combs. On June 4, 1960, he married Norma L. Bailey and she preceded him in death on Oct. 12, 2000.
Surviving are a son, Richard (Michelle) Combs of Waynesfield; three daughters, Peggy (Gregory) Ziegler, Kim (David) Currence and Jennifer Combs, all of Alger; three brothers, Lance (Emma) Combs of Flatgap, Ky., Glen Combs of Kenton and Krit (Robin) Combs of Royston, Ga.; three sisters, Edith Prater and Bonda (Jim) Lightner, both of Kenton and Jewel Hall of Bluffton; ten grandchildren, Jessica Zeigler, Tara Zeigler, Brittany Zeigler, Megan Combs, Ryan Combs, Justin Combs, Rachel Currence, Alana Mullins, Marc Mullins and Emily Boedicker and a great-granddaughter, Destiny Mullins.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Scott M. Combs on June 24, 2002; three brothers, Curtis L. Combs, Oscar Combs and Sylvester Combs and four sisters, Venus Shepherd, Joy Stanley, Barbara Combs and Wanda Moore.
He was an electrician and carpenter and worked at International Car Company in Kenton, He then worked at United Technologies of Kenton and retired from Twin County Maintenance of Waynesfield.
He attended the Hardin Community Bible Church of Alger and was a member of the McGuffey Conservation Club and the Upper Scioto Valley Lions Club.
He loved working with this hands. He enjoyed wood working, gardening, mowing the grass and fishing.
He loved all his grandchildren, his children and his family.
