Polar Bears suffer setback to Mt. Union
ADA - Ohio Northern senior forward Kyle Meyer scored a team-high 24 points by shooting 10-of-13 from the floor, but the ONU men’s basketball team lost to Mount Union 67-63 Sunday afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference action.
The Polar Bears drop to 11-10 overall and 9-5 in conference play while the Purple Raiders improve to 9-12 overall and 7-7 in the OAC.
Ohio Northern battled back from a six-point deficit with about four minutes left in the game and was able to tie it with 1:36 left in the game.
However, Mount Union went 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the final 32 seconds to secure the victory.
"Our offense is predicated around having players move and get open, but today it looked as if they got caught standing around and watching the game," ONU head coach John Rhodes said. "We can’t afford to put the game on the shoulders of one player and expect to play our best."
Junior forward Dave Pellerite led the Purple Raiders as he posted game-highs of 27 points and eight rebounds.
ONU took an early 8-4 lead when senior forward Kyle Meyer laid the ball up and in off a Sean Whitney assist with 15:22 left in the first half.
At the 9:49 mark in the first half the Polar Bears took a 19-10 lead when freshman Taylor Kuhlman drained a three-pointer off an Ezra Bradshaw assist.
Kuhlman had 14 points, four rebounds and a team-high four assists in the game.
The Polar Bears took their largest lead of the half when Meyer converted a pair of free throws with 6:19 remaining.

Columbus Grove uses 17-0 run to finish off Ada
ADA - Columbus Grove went on a 17-0 run over the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second quarter to take control of the game and was never threatened after that on the way to a 64-30 boys basketball win over Ada in a Northwest Conference game Friday.
The host Bulldogs, who fall to 5-9 on the season, got off to a decent start, taking a 12-7 lead after five straight points from Konnor Baker near the end of the first quarter.
After that it was all Grove, as the visiting Bulldogs scored the last five points of the first quarter, including a triple by Luke Kohl at the buzzer that knotted the game at 12-12.
Columbus Grove then tallied the first 12 points of the second quarter, going ahead 24-12, before Ada’s Austin Weber scored two of his eight points to put a halt to the run.

DOLA - The Hardin Northern girls basketball team had a great defensive second quarter only allowing one point as they cruised to a 43-22 victory over Vanlue in Blanchard Valley Conference action Thursday night.

RIDGEWAY - After a sluggish first half, the Upper Scioto Valley girls found their game, outscoring Ridgemont by 18 points in the second half on the way to a 56-35 North West Central Conference win Thursday night.
The Rams, who trailed 10-8 after one quarter and led 21-18 at halftime, gained some breathing room with a 17-8 advantage in the third quarter.
Katie Hicks led USV with 11 points. Mikayla Coburn added 10, Ginny Critten had 8 and Shelby Conley chipped in with 7 points, including two first quarter three-pointers.
USV coach Mike Risner said his team picked up its intensity in the second half after a lackluster first 16 minutes.
"We had a little discussion at halftime about how we weren't getting the effort we needed," Risner said. "They were a little out of synch. I think Tuesday's game (a loss to Liberty-Benton) carried over a little bit in the first half tonight.
"It (the second half) was the first time in a while that we played with any energy," the USV mentor said. "We played with a lot of energy in the second half and that's what we've got to have. I thought it was a team victory. A lot of girls contributed."
USV improves to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in North West Central Conference play.
Ridgemont, which dropped its fourth game in six nights, is now 5-13 and 2-4.
