Hardin Northern’s Becky McElree slides safely into third base before Kenton’s Samantha Kuhlman can apply a tag during the Polar Bears come-from-behind 6-5 win over the Wildcats on Tuesday.
DOLA — For five innings, Kenton looked like it was going to shut down Hardin Northern and come away victorious in the Hardin County softball matchup.
The Polar Bears had other ideas, however, as they rallied from a 4-0 deficit by scoring six runs over the final two innings, including a game-winning two-run double to left field by Addy Bame, to defeat the Wildcats 6-5 on Tuesday.
Hardin Northern improves to 11-10 on the season, while Kenton drops to 12-10.
Polar Bear coach Jeff Hunt said that while he was happy to see his team rally for the win, the important thing was playing well with a tournament game against Ada scheduled for today.
“The win was nice, but we wanted to play well tonight,” the HN mentor said.
Trailing 4-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Polar Bears rallied for three runs on a two-run single by Becky McElree and a RBI when Carlie Doll hit into a fielder’s choice with one out.
Kenton pitcher Kaylee Burd hurls a pitch toward home plate during the game between the Wildcats and Hardin Northern on Tuesday.
The Wildcats answered with a run in the top of the seventh as Morgan Goecke had an RBI single to make it 5-3.
The Polar Bears loaded the bases to start the seventh inning, before Molly Wilson blooped a single to shallow center field to bring home one run.
The next batter, Bame, laced a shot to the left field wall to give Hardin Northern the win.
Wilson and Lea Rowe added doubles for Hardin Northern. McElree finished with two singles.
Goecke added a double for Kenton, while Taylor Ludwig had two singles and Jackie Stalder had one.
McElree and Bame combined to strike out nine Kenton batters, while allowing five hits. Bame pitched the final three innings to get credit for the pitching win.
Goecke, who came on in the sixth inning in relief of Kaylee Burd, took the loss in the circle. Burd and Goecke combined for four strikeouts.
Hardin Northern plays against Ada today in a sectional final contest at USV, while Kenton plays Bluffton at Elida.
