Royals pick up where they left off against Falcons

MOUNT BLANCHARD — After a 15.5-hour postponement to the Riverdale-Wynford football game Friday night, the Royals nearly doubled their scoring output Saturday with 21 fourth-quarter points to pick up a 43-0 non-conference victory at D. Ray Baum Field.
When the contest was halted with 5:55 remaining in the third quarter Friday, Wynford (3-0) held a 22-0 lead. The Royals then dominated the afternoon portion of the game by outgaining the Falcons offensively, 136-26.
“I just didn’t think we had the mentality we had (Friday) night defensively,” Riverdale coach Jeremy Kloepfer said. “They were able to do what Wynford does and that’s to finish a game out.”
The biggest reason the Royals were able to move the ball was running back Corey Brown, who had three carries for 45 yards Saturday to give him 104 yards and two scores on just nine attempts in the game.
“Corey has good speed and that’s something that’s definitely a strength of his and he needs to continue to try and work to the outside on plays where that’s what we’re trying to do,” Wynford coach Gabe Helbert. “We would love to be balanced. … The running game definitely helped us.”
Brown also had a team-high 42 yards receiving.
The Royals dominated the trenches Saturday as they ran for 107 yards on 16 carries and held Riverdale to negative-10 yards rushing on eight attempts.
For the game, Wynford had 340 yards of offense, while the Falcons (1-2) only managed 56 yards, including 32 attempts for 1 yard on the ground.  Adam Fox led Riverdale with 24 yards on eight carries.
After punting on its first drive, Wynford went ahead, 29-0, when quarterback Brock Williamson connected with Nate Assenheimer for a 14-yard touchdown 27 seconds into the fourth quarter.
After turning the ball over on downs to begin Saturday, Riverdale went for the first down again on fourth-and-2 on its own 29-yard line.
“I told the coaches (Friday) night that it’s four-down territory and we needed to get something started (Saturday) because (Friday) we didn’t get anything going offensively,” Kloepfer said. “We were definitely going to go for it the first few times”
Josh Bushong ran straight ahead but finished short of the first down.
On the ensuing possession, Williamson punched in another score at the 7:12 mark when he snuck the ball in from a yard out for the 36-0 advantage.
Running back Keaton Treynor capped off the scoring with a 9-yard scamper into the end zone with 3:32 remaining in the game.
Riverdale travels to Lucas and Wynford plays at Buckeye Central at 7 p.m. Friday.
