Events for Veterans Memorial Park Golf Club for the Week of July 2 are as follows: Wednesday, July 4 – Membership Flag Tournament; Thursday, July 5, 10 a.m.-noon – Junior League; Moose League from 4-6 p.m. on the front nine; Friday, July 6 – Couples League from 4-5:30 p.m. on the front nine; Saturday, July 7 – Round One Medal Play Tournament; Sunday, July 8 – Round Two Medal Play Tournament, 8:30 a.m. tee times; Monday, July 9 – Senior Scramble at 9:30 a.m.
The Junior League will begin this Thursday, July 5 from 10 a.m. to noon. This league is open to children ages 7 through 14 and is free to members of the course and costs $5 for non-members. The league will run for five weeks ending on Aug. 2.
A huge thank you to the course employees and volunteers who worked Saturday morning to ready the course for the day’s two scramble events after “Mother Nature’s” pruning event of Friday night. Job well done!
The membership par three challenge held this past weekend saw the team of Dave Geiger, Daren Fogle, Jim Ellis and Todd Hayter finish first with a score of one under par. Other top places went to the teams of: Larry Mankey, John McEntee, Mike and Jene Ann Wood at two over, Sandy Prater, Joe Prater, Matt Reed, and Kay Fiebiger at three over, and Tyler Boston, Doug Wright, Doug Williams, and Jane Baker at three over. The later two places were decided by a scorecard playoff.
Skill prizes were captured by the following: long putt – Dave Geiger and Larry Mankey; men’s closest to the pin – Jim Ellis and Joe Prater, and ladies’ closest to the pin – Sandy Prater. A special thanks to Dick Piper for the course set up.
Thank you to Russ Laubis who has donated a Bartlett Pear tree in memory of Dennis Seabert to the course. The tree will be placed near the hole six tee box.
The weekly winner for the Tuesday afternoon Senior League this past week was Carter Cavalier, followed by Wayne Moon and Larry Weaver who were tied for second. Duane Spencer continues to lead the league followed by Marv Sallee and then Duane Davis who is third.
A sign-up sheet has been posted for the membership men’s and women’s Medal Play
The tournament is scheduled for July 7 and 8. For the first round on Saturday, participants may play in any group of their choosing provided at least one other person is also playing in the tournament. Rounds on Saturday should be completed by 6:30 p.m. Tee times will be assigned on Sunday based on your Saturday score. This tournament will enforce winter rules which means you may improve your lie only in your own fairway. Information on the different brackets is posted with the sign-up sheets.
Posted at the course is a sign-up sheet for the Rachel Pleasant Oldham Benefit which is scheduled for July 14 with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Cost and guideline information on this scramble is contained in the registration form.
Standings in the Moose League has the team of J. P. White, John McEntee, Scott Sampson, Larry Mankey and Chris Blue leading with 197 points. Second place has the team of Don Dearing, Bob Jackson, Gary Simon, Scott Sorgen and Randy Comer at 192 points and the team of Richard Baum, Jim Davis, Rick Brown, Joey Osborn and Tab Rogers moving into third with 191.5 points.
The Elks League standings finds the team of Ike Wirbel, Gene Longbrake, Jerry Waddle, Dean Longbrake and Roger Crowe in first with 261 points. Second with 257 points belongs to the team of Greg McClain, Dave Deever, Daren Fogle, Ernie Klingelhofer and Todd Cannode. The team of Brian McCune, Jeff Buroker, Terry Ulmer, Dwight Ramge and Jason VanBuskirk with 240 points rounds out the top three teams.
