COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Thirteen bears seized by authorities or surrendered by owners in Ohio have a new home in Colorado.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that nine adult bears and four cubs were moved at the end of May from a state containment facility in suburban Columbus to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado.

Animal welfare group People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals helped pay for the transportation of the bears and some of their care.

Ohio tightened it rules for exotic animal ownership after a suicidal man released dozens of bears, tigers and other creatures at his Zanesville-area farm several years ago.

A spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Agriculture says it has relocated 145 animals in the past year or more because of the state’s ownership restrictions.
