Ohio leaders stick to new evaluation for schools

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s administration isn’t backing down from a plan to implement a tougher school evaluation system, despite pressure from teachers and education groups that want to delay the rollout.
A Kasich spokesman tells The Columbus Dispatch the administration wants the new system in place this year. Many districts are expected to get lower ratings under the system.
A legislative panel started hearing testimony Tuesday about the evaluation system and other education-related aspects of the governor’s mid-biennium budget proposal.
A consultant for Ohio’s largest teachers union said lower ratings may hurt the financial help schools get from communities. The Ohio School Boards Association told the committee that delaying the new system would allow time to analyze the best method for presenting parents and communities with the information.
