Kenton’s Alexis Ratliff hurls a pitch toward the plate during Saturday’s 10-9 win over McComb.

Alexis Ratliff hit a fly ball to center field that was dropped, allowing Riley Totten to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Kenton rallied to beat visiting McComb 10-9 on Saturday in nonconference softball play.

McComb had the game’s first two runs in the top of the third inning, but the Wildcats (3-12) answered with four runs in the home half of the frame.

McComb responded with three runs in the top of the fourth inning, then Macee Heckathorn crushed a two-run home run to give Kenton a 6-5 lead.

McComb tallied four runs in the top of the fifth inning, and Kenton fought back with three runs in the bottom of the frame to tie it at 9-9.

“We have been working really hard and we know it’s been a tough season for us, but the young girls are starting to understand what it’s like to be out here in a high school ball game,” Kenton coach Brooke Austin said. “We had some great hits today. Emori went 3-for-4. Brayla got on base just about every time. Macee’s home run was beautiful. We had a few errors, but we picked it up with our hitting.”

Heckathorn recorded three RBIs, two runs, a home run, a single and a walk for Kenton. CJ Newberry notched two singles, an RBI and scored a run. Lyla Gammon drove in a run. Emori Criner contributed two singles and two runs. Totten scored twice and singled. Brayla Butler scored twice, drew two walks and singled.

Ratliff threw four innings with three earned runs allowed on five hits. Kylee Kavanaugh was the winning pitcher, going three innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts.

“Alexis started off really good, then we drew some walks. Kylee came in and was fantastic pitching. She does a great job placing the ball. She has a really good mental game,” Austin said.
