Chief Chad Smith of BKP Ambulance District was welcomed by Rotarian Sam Norris and others for an update about BKP and the ambulance service in Hardin County.

Smith started by thanking everyone who voted for the recent BKP levy.  No one like to pay more taxes but this helps ensure the continued excellent ambulance service within the partnership of Buck, Dudley, Cessna, Lynn, Goshen and Pleasant Townships and  the city of Kenton.

Smith continued, EMS service across the country is shifting away from volunteer service. People are busier and volunteerism is in decline, so professional personnel are necessary.

When asked about the future of EMS service with the recent closure of the Southeast Hardin ambulance district, Smith responded that the district has been broken up and other EMS stations will cover, including BKP even though they are out of the district.  This is what is called mutual aid.

Other departments sometimes can’t or do not have the ability to cover their district when called upon for service.  That is where other departments help fill the gap, often times without any financial reimbursment.

Smith spoke about the uphill battle he and his crew have faced since his arrival five years ago. With the help of Assistant Chief Shelly Prater and Fiscal Officer Morgan Gaudet and the rest of the men and women at BKP, the culture has shifted for the better.  He also thanked the board of trustees for believing in him and allowing him to “get things done” at BKP.

With fiscal responsibility, hard work, community outreach and strong partnerships with the city and county, he feels that BKP is on the right track and has bettered its reputation and quality of service to the community.
