Mark your calendar now for the Hardin County Precision Ag Field Day to be held Aug. 23 at Kellogg Farms, 17392 TR 50, near Forest. Bill and Shane Kellogg have committed 305 acres to the Blanchard River Demonstration Farms Network in cooperation with Ohio Farm Bureau and USDA.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Karl Wedemeyer, a dairy farmer from LaRue, recently visited Washington, D.C., to meet with congressional leaders and discuss issues impacting the dairy industry. Wedemeyer attended the 2017 National Milk Producers Federation’s Dairy Policy and Legislative Forum as a representative of Dairy Farmers of America’s (DFA) Young Cooperator (YC) program.

The wheat crop is drying down very fast and harvest is starting in some parts of the state. As harvest continues over the next few weeks, growers should keep their eyes on the weather and the moisture content of the grain to ensure good quality wheat.

Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa pratensis) is one of the most popular cool-season grasses with excellent color, texture, and density. The biggest advantage of this grass is its underground stems, referred to as rhizomes.

For the time period of May 1-May 31, Extension rainfall reporters recorded an average of 7.21 inches of rain in Hardin County. Last year, the average rainfall for the same time period was 3.27 inches. Rainfall for May was 3.45 inches more than the ten year average rainfall during the same dates.

Persistent wet weather prevented soybean planting in many areas of the state. Late planting reduces the cultural practice options for row spacing, seeding rate, and relative maturity.

Children will have the opportunity to experience ‘Ready, Set, Grow!’ during the Children’s Day at the Friendship Gardens set for Saturday, June 3. Sponsored by the Hardin County OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteers, this educational activity is planned for children ages kindergarten through fifth grade.

Wheat is now flowering in parts of northern Ohio and will continue to flower over the next week or so. According to the Fusarium Head Blight forecasting system (http://www.wheatscab.psu.edu/), the risk for head scab is low in central and northern Ohio for fields flowering at this time.

Several members of the Ada FFA chapter recently attended the 89th annual Ohio FFA State Convention in Columbus on May 5. In attendance was the chapter’s officer team along with many other members.
