Dunkirk uncovers town treasures

Dunkirk treasure chests

DUNKIRK — Until recently, most people in the village of Dunkirk had no idea there were two historical treasure chests stored in the attic of their municipal building. Possibly the only person in the village who was aware the two trunks of memories existed was former town clerk Bob Douglas. He had been told of the cases tucked away in the upper level of the building by former mayor and local historian the late Jim Shuff.

This “Storybook Backyard” and beautifully landscaped front yard, completed by Chris and Dennis Branan of Dunkirk, is a fun and beautiful place to visit, said Deb Phillips, program manager with Keep Hardin County Beautiful, which presented the couple with a residential beautification award.

The first phase in development of the Warriors First improvements at Saulisberry Park continued on Wednesday morning with the pouring of the concrete for a fire ring. Located just west of the office building at the park, the area offers visitors an opportunity to enjoy the solitude and peace of the France Lake, said the Rev. Scott Johnson.
