The Kenton High School competition cheerleading team is competing in the state competition at Ohio State University on Sunday. It is first time in school history the team will compete in the competition.

Ridgemont’s Priscilla Howland was selected as the Northwest Central Conference player of the year and three other Gophers received all-league recognition on the teams released on Wednesday. Howland, a senior who averaged 17.9 points and 9.2 rebounds per game this past season, has led the Gophers to a 16-8 mark and into the school’s first district tournament appearance since 1990.

Several Kenton players received recognition on both the boys and girls All-Western Buckeye League basketball teams released on Monday afternoon. On the boys squads, Wildcat junior Jaron Sharp was selected to the first team, while sophomore Landon Rush received honorable mention.

BELLE CENTER — Belle Center United Methodist Church will host its 3rd Annual Middle School Dodgeball Tournament on Saturday, March 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. Anyone in 5th-8th grade can participate in the free tournament.

MOUNT VICTORY —Before the current members of the Ridgemont girls basketball team entered high school, the Lady Gopher program was in a decades-long rut where wins in a season usually could be counted on one hand. In fact, none of the Ridgemont girls were even born the last time the Gopher program had a winning season.

Last Saturday, the Kenton girls basketball team did something no Lady Wildcat team has done since 1998 when it defeated Wapakoneta 48-33 to win a sectional championship. This week, the Lady Wildcats will try to do something no other KHS girls team has done – cut down a district net.

LIMA — Despite holding Lima Temple Christian to 24 first-half points, Ridgemont’s offense never found its groove, scoring just 24 total in a 59-24 boys basketball loss in Tuesday night’s Division IV sectional semifinal at Bath High School.

CAREY — Near the end of the third quarter of the Division IV sectional semifinal between the New Riegel and Riverdale boys basketball teams, it appeared the result could be similar to the first meeting between the Blue Jackets and Falcons, a one-point New Riegel victory.

ST. PARIS — Ben Logan had three wrestlers advance through sectional competition on Saturday to this week’s Division II district meet at Wilmington. Cole Houser won the 138-pound weight class at the Graham sectional, defeating Springfield Northwestern’s Jacob Lees 9-1 in the finals.
