ASHLAND — Ashland University senior wide receiver Matthew Wilcox has been named the recipient of the 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Jack H. McAvoy Award, announced on Thursday by GLIAC Commissioner Kris Dunbar.

Three athletes from area football teams received first-team honors on the All-Northwest District football teams released on Thursday. Kenton senior Shawn Conover was selected to the Division IV first team at linebacker after leading the Wildcats with 12.7 tackles per game and five interceptions this past season.

The Black team defeated the White team by one point in Thursday night’s Masonic Pool play. The White team now leads the tournament by 11 points.

DOLA — The Hardin Northern Fall Sports Awards Banquet was held on Monday night with athletes that participated in football, volleyball, cross country and cheerleading receiving special awards.

The Hardin County Family YMCA, in coordination with Ohio Northern University students, will host the first ever Jingle Bell Jaunt at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2. The race will begin and finish at the Hardin County YMCA in Kenton.

TOLEDO — The Ohio Northern men's basketball team nearly pulled off a huge upset, trailing by just two points in the final three minutes before falling 72-62 in an exhibition game at NCAA Division I foe Toledo on Tuesday evening at Savage Arena.

Players from three area schools received second-team recognition on the All-State soccer teams released over the weekend. Kenton junior Landon Bartlett and Ben Logan junior George Kern were voted to the Division II boys second team.
