Defiance edges Kenton girls 1-0 on penalty kick shootout

DEFIANCE — When a soccer match gets to a penalty kick shootout, it becomes a guessing game for the goalkeepers. On Tuesday night, Defiance keeper Teyah Castillo guessed correctly once more than Kenton keeper Alivia Purtee and that was exactly the number the Bulldogs needed as they edged Kenton 1-0 in a shootout in sectional semifinal play.

Last year’s tourney disappointment sparks 2017 Wildcats

Last fall, a sophomore-laden Kenton boys soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Elida in the Wildcat program’s first-ever home sectional tournament game at Merold Field. That loss proved to be a pivotal point in the young Wildcats’ development as they used it as a rallying cry for a 2017 campaign that evolved into the best regular season in program history with 14 wins and a second place finish in the Western Buckeye League.

DOLA — Leading two sets to one but trailing 9-7 to Old Fort in the fourth set, the Hardin Northern girls reached down and found a little something extra. The Lady Polar Bears went on to surrender just eight more points to take the set 25-17 and advance from Monday’s first round of the Division IV sectional tournament by defeating the Stockaders 25-17, 22-25, 25-15, 25-17.
