Second quarter run lifts Elgin past Gophers

MOUNT VICTORY — Elgin outscored Ridgemont 19-2 in the second quarter to take control on the scoreboard and then held off Ridgemont for the final 16 minutes on the way to a 49-38 victory in the championship game of the host Gophers season-opening tournament on Saturday night.

ADA — Junior Nate Burger scored a career-high 22 points in a losing effort as the Ohio Northern men's basketball team, fell to visiting Wisconsin-Whitewater 87-72 on Saturday afternoon.

SPENCERVILLE — Spencerville outscored Hardin Northern by seven points in the third quarter on the way to a 53-48 victory over Hardin Northern in season-opening girls basketball action Friday night.

Hanna Legge has been working toward earning a college softball scholarship for a long time. All that work paid off recently as the Kenton High School senior signed a national letter of intent to play next year at Urbana University.

Basketball season begins tonight

Several area high schools are in action as the girls basketball season tips off tonight and Saturday. Ridgemont begins the 2016-17 season at home tonight as it hosts Ridgedale in the second game of a season-opening tournament at 8 p.m. Fairbanks and Elgin will play in the first game of the night at 6 p.m.

ADA — Britt Lauck poured in a team-high 20 points and added a career-best eight assists as the No. 23-ranked Ohio Northern women defeated Defiance 82-58 on Tuesday. The Polar Bears improve to 4-0 overall, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-2.
