ARCADIA — Owen Wetherill’s four rushing touchdowns helped lead the Hardin Northern Polar Bears to a 35-14 win over Arcadia in the opening game of the season on Friday. Wetherill racked up 173 yards on 19 carries, scoring from 2, 13, 6 and 61 yards out.

COLUMBUS GROVE — Sidney Plott and Addison Modd had two goals each as the Kenton girls soccer team defeated Columbus Grove 4-0 on Thursday night. The Wildcats led 3-0 at halftime. Kenton, which improves to 3-0 on the season, travels to Upper Sandusky on Saturday.

CELINA — The Kenton High School girls tennis team improved to 2-0 in Western Buckeye League play with a 3-2 win over celina on Thursday. The Wildcats received a victory from Mykaela Schriber at No. 1 singles and both of their doubles tandems as they improve to 4-1 on the season.

Wapakoneta defeated Kenton 178-182 in a Western Buckeye League golf match on Thursday afternoon at Memorial Park Golf Course. The Wildcats were paced by Rocco Longbrake, who shot a 40 to earn medalist honors.

LaRUE — Elgin swept Ridgemont 25-9, 25-9, 25-17 in a Northwest Central Conference volleyball match on Thursday. The Gophers were paced by Shaylee McGrath, who had 6 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces and Cassidy Knapp, who had 12 digs and an ace.

DEGRAFF — Hardin Northern got past Riverside in four games 25-16, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23 in a Northwest Central Conference volleyball match on Thursday. Morgan Pauley and Rylie Bame had 11 kills each to lead the Polar Bear attack.

COLDWATER — Coldwater defeated Ada in four games 25-14, 23-25, 19-25, 19-25 in a non-league volleyball matchup on Thursday night. Rilan Conley had 10 kills at the net and 14 digs defensively to lead the Bulldogs.

His players didn’t put the ball in the net as much as Kenton boys soccer coach Jamie Bartlett would have liked during Wednesday night’s 4-0 home win over Ada. But there was not much else for the Wildcat mentor to be disappointed about after he watched his team control the run of play for almost the entire 80 minutes of the victory.

After watching her team play kind of sluggishly in a season-opening win over Ben Logan on Saturday, Kenton coach Ali Manley wanted to see a fast start out of her team when the Lady Wildcats hosted Ada on Wednesday night. She got her wish as Hannah Holland netted the first of her six goals less than two minutes into the game.

The Kenton football team will be trying to do something a group of Wildcats hasn’t done in a while when it opens the 2018 season at Robinson field on Friday night – beat Coldwater. The Wildcat program, which returns 15 players that started at some point during last fall’s 5-5 campaign, last won the season-opener against the Cavaliers in 2013.
