Mike Johnson (left) secured the double at the first Trophy Bassmasters event of the season at Lake Erie recently. Johnson’s bass limit of smallmouth weighed 19.53 pounds with the lunker at 5.66 pounds. Don Ratcliff (middle) came in second place at 17.17 pounds. Boyd Downey (right) was third at 17.10 pounds.

The Trophy Bassmasters kicked off the 2025 fishing season at Lake Erie recently.
The crazy weather this spring took a day off and greeted the anglers with calm seas and clear skies.
The catch rates reflected the good weather day as the 18 anglers brought in 78 keeper bass of at least 14” and the total weight was 213.33 pounds. All were released alive.
Big winner for the day was Mike Johnson as he both won the tournament and had the big bass for the day. Johnson’s five bass limit of smallmouth weighed 19.53 pounds with the lunker at 5.66 pounds.
Don Ratcliff weighed in a five bass limit of largemouth for second place. Ratcliff’s creel totaled 17.17 pounds.
A very close third place was Boyd Downey. Downey had five bass that weighed 17.10 pounds to claim the final spot on the podium.
