Kenton’s Maddox Hommel tosses a pitch toward the plate during Monday’s 4-0 win over Upper Sandusky. He struck out eight with just two hits given up across seven innings to secure the win. He also drove in two runs at the plate.

Maddox Hommel tossed a complete game shutout and drove in two runs as Kenton beat Upper Sandusky 4-0 in Monday’s nonconference baseball season opener at Kenton.

Hommel struck out eight with just two hits given up across seven innings to secure the win.

“Great team effort tonight,” Kenton coach Josh Wormley said. “It took us a few innings at the plate to piece something together, their pitcher had good off speed and kept us off balance but that second time through the lineup we were able to make some adjustments. Maddox did exactly what we expected him to, fill up the strike zone, miss barrels and get weak contact. Really happy with the way we battled and played a complete game as a team.”

Hommel doubled on a line drive to left field, bringing home Amiel Huff and Quin Kozman to go up 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hommel reached home on an error for the fourth run.

Kenton’s Gavin Scott slapped an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning to break the scoreless deadlock. Scott was 1-for-3.

Austin Dysert singled and scored a run for the Wildcats (1-0). Huff had a single and a run. Kozman scored a run and drew a walk.

Justin Heilman doubled and singled for the Rams (0-1).

Wyatt Taylor was the losing pitcher, going five innings with four runs (three earned) allowed. He struck out four.

Kenton hosts Ridgemont at 5 p.m. Thursday.
