McGUFFEY — Shawnee used a 20-4 third quarter run to break open a close game on the way to a 53-37 win over Upper Scioto Valley in a non-league girls basketball game on Tuesday night. The Indians trailed 12-8 after one quarter and 19-17 at halftime before taking control in the third eight minutes.

ALGER — The body of a man believed to have been entrapped in his burning home west of Alger has been found. According to a press release from the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office, the body of Hugh Ries, 65, was discovered at approximately 2:15 p.m. Monday in a crawl space beneath rubble of the collapsed kitchen at 0529 CR 80.

Elida defeated Kenton 34-27 in a Western Buckeye League wrestling dual match on Monday night. Winning for the Wildcats were Noah Eikenbary who pinned Koby Smith in 1:48 at 195 pounds and Mason Rhoades, who claimed a 14-9 decision over Ethan Grimm at 120 pounds.

Firefighters from several departments battled a blaze at 0532 County Road 80, west of Alger, on Sunday evening, which has developed into a mystery. When the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher received a call, the caller said there might be someone trapped inside the burning house.

Hosting a youthful Allen East squad less than 24 hours after Kenton’s most lopsided loss of the season, Wildcat basketball coach Matt McCullough wanted to see his boys basketball team take care of business early on Saturday night. He got his wish as the Wildcats opened up an eight-point lead after eight minutes and stretched it to more than 20 points by halftime in pulling away for an 81-50 victory over the Mustangs.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — After Ridgemont’s Priscilla Howland had been held scoreless in the first half with her team trailing 22-19, she found her stride and put up 24 second-half points against Riverdale Saturday afternoon, helping the Gophers to a 61-46 victory.

When the Make A Wish Foundation told Kaylee Ritter she was eligible for a trip with her family, the Kenton High School sophomore at first thought of attending a concert or seeing the sites of Europe, but then settled on a trip to Hawaii.

OTTAWA — Despite a quick start, Kenton ultimately couldn’t withstand the defensive pressure exerted by Ottawa-Glandorf, surrendering 101 points in a 101-57 loss on the road Friday night. The defeat drops Kenton to 11-7 overall, 2-5 in the Western Buckeye League.
