Dry fall allows farmers to have early harvest

During the month of September, Extension volunteer rainfall reporters received an average of 1.57 inches of rain. The most rain for this month, 2.80 inches, fell in Hale Township, as measured by Tim Ramsey. The least rain reported during the month, 0.79 inches, was reported in Buck Township by Heritage Cooperative (Kenton).

Area sheep producers gain insight into methods abroad

Sheep tour

Sheep is a major part of the diets of residents of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland and a group of local sheep producers just returned from a tour of those countries to gain a better insight of their methods. Steve and Madelyn Lowery, Nancy Wilcox, Dave Burkhart and Ohio Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator Mark Badertscher took part in the tour sponsored by the OSU Extension Office and the Ohio Sheep Improvement Association.

Five from Hardin County part of International Sheep Tour of UK and Ireland

Five Hardin County people joined an OSU Extension and Ohio Sheep Improvement Association International Sheep Tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland. Local sheep producers Dave Burkhart, Nancy Wilcox, Steve Lowery, Madelyn Lowery, and OSU Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator Mark Badertscher joined a group of 23 sheep producers, sheep industry personnel, and OSU Extension Educators on a two-week trip to Scotland, England, Wales, and Ireland

Poultry exhibitors participate in special photo competition

Due to the ban on poultry exhibits in Ohio, all 4-H and FFA poultry exhibitors across the state, including Hardin County, were unable to bring their poultry project birds to the county fairs. The Hardin County Fair Board stepped up and provided a generous poultry program at this year’s fair, including extensive poster display and contest, full showmanship show with fair board-purchased fake birds and full junior fair livestock sale participation to all with market poultry projects.

Variety of cheeses offered at sale by dairy group

The Hardin County Dairy Service Unit is holding its semi-annual cheese sale. The fall sale has a variety of cheeses to choose from including Colby, Muenster, Smoked Cheddar, Mozzarella, Marble, American Processed, Farmers Cheese, Cheddar, Big Eye Swiss, Baby Swiss, Lacey Swiss (low cholesterol, low fat), Hot Pepper, and also Trail Bologna.

Nominations sought for Agriculture Hall of Fame

Applications are being accepted for the 2015 Hardin County Agriculture Hall of Fame through the end of business on Oct. 16. Nominees must have made their major contribution to agriculture primarily as a result of being born, growing up, living in, or working in Hardin County, Ohio.
