McGUFFEY — The Upper Scioto Valley girls basketball team opened the season with a 77-60 win over Mohawk on Friday night. The victory was not without an anxious moment or two for the Rams however.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Riverdale built a big early lead Friday night on its way to a 68-40 victory over Hardin Northern in the girls basketball opener for both teams. “It was a good first game,” Riverdale coach Maryann Holderman said.

BELLEFONTAINE — Ben Logan swept Sidney and Mechanicsburg in boys bowling Friday. The Raiders used a good final game to defeat Sidney by six pins, 2,604-2,598.

Hardin Northern hosted Kenton on Tuesday night in the final girls basketball scrimmage for both teams as they open the regular season this weekend. Hardin Northern’s Alanna Roth tries to get out of a double-team by Kenton’s Layne Taylor (left) and Ashley Morris.

Kenton senior Aarin Tillman earned first-team all-Western Buckeye League recognition for the 2015 football season. Tillman was selected as a first-team defensive lineman.

ASHLAND — The Ashland University football team begins its quest for a national championship at home against Grand Valley State in an NCAA Division II Super Region 4 quarterfinal on Saturday at noon. Several local players are on the team. Tristan Reichelderfer and Austin Phillips, both of Kenton, are defensive ends for the Eagles.

Kenton boys soccer coach Jamie Bartlett was working the sideline one more time this season in a high school game Saturday.

Kenton and Ridgemont squared off in a girls basketball scrimmage Saturday afternoon in Mount Victory as the teams begin final preparations for the regular season.

ADA — The Ohio Northern football team received an at-large bid to the 2015 NCAA III Playoffs on Sunday. The Polar Bears travel to Franklin (Ind.) where they will be taking on the Grizzles in the first round of the Playoffs.
