USV’s Patton earns NWCC’s top award

Upper Scioto Valley swept through its Northwest Central Conference girls basketball schedule and captured the league’s top awards. Mike Risner was selected as Coach of the Year and USV junior Emily Patton was named Player of the Year.

Rams have five honored by NWCC

Upper Scioto Valley had three players selected to either the first or second All-Northwest Central Conference team for boys basketball, tied for the most with league champion Perry. The Rams and Commodores combined to take up half of the 12 spots.

Ricketts named to top team

Ben Logan senior Grant Ricketts was selected to the Central Buckeye Conference Mad River Division first team. Ricketts was second in the division in scoring, averaging 16.6 points a game.

Youth Wrestling: Feb. 23, 2016

ADA — The Kenton Youth wrestling team had a pair of first-place finishers Sunday at the Miami Valley Kids Wrestling Association Regional Championships held at Ohio Northern University. Anthony Hunt and Isaiah Mundy both went 3-0 to win the title.

LIMA — Haley Wyss couldn’t miss in the first half Saturday. The Ada junior shot 6-of-6 from the 3-point line in the first 12:15 of a girls basketball sectional final against top-seeded Minster. As a team, the Bulldogs shot 11-of-15 through the first 13 minutes and built a 10-point lead late in the second quarter.

Despite a valiant effort, the fourth-seeded Lady Raiders weren’t able to make enough plays down the stretch to secure the 22nd win needed to continue their season as they fell to the third-seeded Cougars 58-55.

Several local wrestlers advance to district

CLYDE — Kenton had four wrestlers finish in the top four Saturday at the Division II Clyde Sectional and advance to the district tournament. Riley Fitzgerald (113 pounds), Tobias Mendoza (145), Dustin Edler (152) and C.J. Cook (160) advanced.
