HN erupts for 7 runs in 3rd inning of season-opening win at Bucyrus

BUCYRUS — Bucyrus had the first run of the game, but Hardin Northern went up 2-1 by the end of the third inning and erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning to pull away for a 9-3 win in Saturday’s softball season opener at Bucyrus.

The Redmen (0-1) went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning after Ni’Cia Floyd was walked with the bases loaded.

Kaitlyn Whitaker and Addy Bacon were able to reach home on a passed ball in the top of the third inning to put the Polar Bears (1-0) up 2-1.

Karli Fath drove in Milee Seabrook with a grounder and Morgan Stewart nearly scored, but was thrown out at home to leave it at 3-1 Polar Bears.

The onslaught continued with six more runs in the fourth inning as Katy Barlow, Whitaker and Lyla Holtzberger all brought in one run. Seabrook slapped a three-run double to push it to 9-1.

Seabrook had three RBIs, two hits and one run. Whitaker went for two runs, two hits and one RBI. Fath and Barlow both had one hit, one run and one RBI.

Lyla Holtzberger went the distance in the circle to get the pitching win with six strikeouts and three earned runs allowed. Holtzberger had a hit, a run and an RBI at the plate.

Next up, Hardin Northern hosts Riverdale at 5 p.m. today.
