Area grapplers advance to sectional semifinals

LIMA — Ada’s Chase Sumner and Damien Cameron both advanced to the semifinal round of the championship bracket on the first day of Division III sectional wrestling competition at Lima Central Catholic on Friday. Sumner won his first two matches by pin at 138 pounds, while Cameron, competing at 113 pounds, had a bye in the first round before winning by pin in his quarterfinal match.

Gophers put up valiant effort before ‘running out of gas’ against LCC

LIMA — With emotions still raw from the recent death of teammate Keegan McKee, the Ridgemont girls played basketball on Wednesday night. And for three quarters, the Lady Gophers looked like they were going to ride the wave of those emotions to a sectional tournament victory as they held a 13-point lead over Lima Central Catholic going into the final eight minutes.

Patton, Weyant receive top NWCC honors

Upper Scioto Valley’s Emily Patton was selected as the Northwest Central Conference player of the year and Ridgemont’s Tim Weyant was selected as the league’s top coach in all-league voting released on Wednesday. Patton averaged 20 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5 assists per game in leading the Rams to an 18-3 regular season record and a perfect 6-0 NWCC mark.

Raiders’ rally falls short in loss to Kenton Ridge

NEW CARLISLE — A second half comeback by Ben Logan came up short as Kenton Ridge held off the Raiders 68-64 in Division II sectional play at Tecumseh High School on Wednesday night. The Raiders trailed 15-14 after eight minutes and 37-24 at halftime before outscoring the No. 4 seeded Cougars 25-15 in the third quarter to pull within 52-49.

BW knocks ONU men out of OAC tourney

ADA — Sophomore Ryan Bruns scored a career-high 29 points to lead the Ohio Northern, but the Polar Bears came up on the short end of the scoreboard as they fell to Baldwin Wallace 72-71 in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday night.

LIMA — The first time Ada and Hardin Northern met this season, the Polar Bears were unable to recover after a poor second quarter in which they were outscored by 15 points and ended up with a 13-point loss. On Tuesday, the Polar Bears didn’t let the same thing happen twice. During sectional semifinal girls basketball play between the two country rivals, the Polar Bears - behind the scoring punch of Ashton Dye and Holly Wilson - pulled away for a 60-49 victory.
